Hiring a web designer can feel overwhelming — especially if you have never done it before. What questions should you ask? What should you provide? How long does it take? And how do you know if you are getting a good deal?

This guide walks you through the entire website design process in plain English so you know exactly what to expect.

Step 1: The Initial Conversation

A good web designer starts by understanding your business. Expect questions about what your business does, who your customers are, what suburbs or areas you serve, whether you have an existing website and what your goals are.

This conversation helps the designer understand the scope of your project and recommend the right approach. If a designer jumps straight to pricing without asking about your business, that is a red flag.

Step 2: Proposal and Pricing

After the initial conversation, your web designer should provide a clear proposal outlining what is included, how much it costs and the expected timeline. Look for transparency — if the pricing is vague or there are “additional fees” mentioned without specifics, ask for clarification.

At RankReady, every package is a flat rate with no hidden fees. You can see our full pricing and know exactly what you are paying and what you are getting before you commit.

Always ask what is NOT included. Common extras that catch people off guard include SEO copywriting, stock images, domain registration, hosting and ongoing maintenance.

Step 3: Content and Information Gathering

Once you have agreed on the project, your designer needs information about your business. This typically includes your business details (name, address, phone, email), services or products you offer, areas you serve, photos or brand assets and any specific content you want on the site.

Do not worry if you do not have all the content ready. A good web designer will write the copy for you — or at least guide you on what to provide.

Step 4: Design and Development

This is where the actual website gets built. Depending on the approach, you might see wireframes, mockups or a staging site during this phase. The timeline varies — agencies typically take 6–12 weeks, while specialists like RankReady can deliver in days.

A clear timeline sets expectations and keeps the project on track.

Step 5: Review and Revisions

Before your site goes live, you will have the chance to review it and request changes. Most designers include a set number of revision rounds in their pricing. Common feedback at this stage includes adjusting colours or fonts, updating text, swapping images and reordering sections.

Step 6: Launch Day

Once you are happy with the site, it goes live. Your designer should handle the technical setup — domain connection, SSL certificate, sitemap submission and basic analytics.

After launch, ask your designer to walk you through how to make basic updates if needed. You should also confirm that you own the website, domain and hosting — not the designer.

Questions to Ask Your Web Designer

Before you sign anything, make sure you ask these key questions:

  1. Is SEO included? If not, your site might look great but never rank.
  2. Do I own the website? Make sure there are no lock-in contracts.
  3. What is the timeline? Get a specific date, not just “a few weeks.”
  4. What happens after launch? Is support included? For how long?
  5. Can you show me examples? Look at sites they have built for similar businesses.
